  • Description

THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR WILLY BRANDT RETURNED TO BONN TONIGHT (THURSDAY) AFTER A MIXED RECEPTION DURING HIS VISIT TO EAST GERMANY FOR THE FIRST EVER SUMMIT TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. WHEN THE WEST GERMAN LEADER ARRIVED IN ERFURT FOR THE SUMMIT HE WAS CHEERED BY A LARGE CROWD. BUT AT THE END OF THE TALKS AT THE ERFURT HOTEL THE CROWDS WERE CALLING FOR RECOGNITION OF EAST GERMANY. HE WAS MET AT THE STATION BY EAST GERMAN PRIME MINISTER, WILLI STOPH.

THE TWO GERMAN LEADERS HELD A FULL DAY OF DISCUSSIONS. MR. BRANDT ARRIVED IN ERFURT BY TRAIN FROM BONN. AFTER A BRIEF GREETING AT THE STATION, HE WALKED WITH MR. STOPH TO THE ERFURT HOTEL. OUTSIDE A LARGE CROWD CHEERED AND CALLED OUT TO THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR.

THE TWO MEN ENTERED THE HOTEL AND GOT STRAIGHT DOWN TO DISCUSSION. THEY FACED EACH OTHER ACROSS A TABLE AND BOTH READ OUT PREPARED SPEECHES IN WHICH EACH EXPRESSED THE WILL TO NEGOTIATE.

MR. STOPH REPEATEDLY STRESSED THAT THE ONLY PATH TOWARDS A NORMALISATION OF RELATIONS FOR BONN TO TAKE WAS THAT OF DIPLOMATIC RECOGNITION FOR EAST BERLIN.

THE TALKS CONTINUED OVER LUNCH AND PRIVATE DISCUSSIONS FOLLOWED IN THE EVENING.

SHORTLY BEFORE MR. BRANDT LEFT FOR BONN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE SUMMIT TALKS WILL CONTINUE AT KASSEL IN WEST GERMANY ON MAY 21.
