The Arab League Council met in Cairo on Tuesday (7 December) to discuss Iran's occupation of three Gulf Islands, the Greater and Lesser Tubs and Abu Mussa.

Included in the two-day emergency session was the newly-formed union of Arab Emirates which had been admitted into the League the previous day.

Shortly after the session closed, Tripoli radio announced that Libya had nationalised the British Petroleum Company in retaliation for Britain's failure to prevent the Iranian take-over of the Gulf Islands on November 30.

The League, meeting at ambassadorial level, came on the heals of demonstrations in Arab countries against the Iranian invasion of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Mussa, on November 30.

The newly-formed Union of Emirates had only been elected into the League the previous day.

Libya was among League members present here. But it was from Tripoli, shortly after the session drew to a close, that the Libyan government announced its nationalisation of the British Petroleum Company. They were replying to Britain's failure to prevent the Iranian take-over before withdrawing from the Gulf.
