  • Description

Soccer....and Egypt gained sweet revenge in Cairo by beating Nigeria 3-1 in the second leg of their African elimination match for the World Cup. In the first leg match at Lagos, Nigeria had thrashed Egypt 4-0.

SYNOPSIS: A crowd of 120,000 had poured into Cairo Stadium hoping to see the visiting Nigerians crushed.

Egypt were quickly into attack. They were more confident than in the earlier match. This time, they had fierce crowd support and were fielding a much stronger team. Unless Egypt won handsomely, their World Cup hoped were dead.

But Nigeria had moments in the early passages of play. A win here would virtually put them on the plane for Argentina. Egypt startled them with a swift, and neatly taken, goal in the eleventh minute. After a Nigerian attack had petered out, a long pass upfield split their defence. Bursting through with typical speed, Egyptian winger Moustafa Abdu rushed away to score.

Nigeria were still winning a good share of the ball, yet their forwards could not create space to open up potential scoring chances. Egypt's humiliation in the first leg match had taught them a lot. They now looked tactically sounder and had the players to cap off good work in midfield. Eighteen minutes after scoring their first goal, they opened the way for a second by winning a corner kick.

The approach work from the corner was somewhat messy, but Moustafa Abdu judged a long shot precisely for his second goal.

At halftime, Egypt led by 2-1 after Godwin Iewelumo had pulled back a goal for Nigeria.

Five minutes into the second half, and Egypt were safe. A brisk move along the left wing, a good cross and Mukhtar Mukhtar scored their third goal.
