SYNOPSIS: Firemen fought for three hours last week in a vain effort to put out a fire which destroyed a large department store in Liverpool, a suburb of the Australian city of Sydney. The fire broke out just before closing time and a group of small children playing in the store's toy department raised the alarm.

Shoppers fled while staff collected money from the tills and everybody in the building got away safely.

Firemen fighting the blaze were hampered by large crowds of spectators.

Firemen poured so much water on the burning building that water mains the area ran dry. Their task was made more difficult when the fire spread to a paint store, which added more fuel to the blaze.

Flames leapt fifty feet into the air and could be seen from fifteen miles away.

The fire completely destroyed the two-storey department store causing damage estimated at one and a half million pounds.
