    MR. KRISHNA MENON, THE FIERY EX-DEFENCE MINISTER OF INDIA WON A BY-ELECTION IN WEST BENGAL ON TUESDAY (13 MAY) TO RETURN TO THE INDIAN PARLIAMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWO YEARS. RUNNING AS A LEFT-WING INDEPENDENT WITH THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNIST - DOMINATED UNITED FRONT, MR. MENON WON THE CONSTITUENCY OF MIDNAPORE WITH AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF MORE THAN 100,000 VOTES. YESTERDAY THURSDAY HE FLEW TO NEW DELHI WHERE HE WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED BY SUPPORTERS AND OLD POLITICAL FRIENDS.

    MR. KRISHNA MENON, WHO RESIGNED AS DEFENCE MINISTER IN 1962 AFTER THE CHINESE PUSHED BACK THE INDIAN TROOPS ALONG THE NORTH-EASTERN FRONTIERS DURING THE BORDER WAR, REPRESENTED EAST BOMBAY IN PARLIAMENT FROM 1957 TO 1967 WHEN HE LOST HIS SEAT. HE THEN RESIGNED FROM THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY BECAUSE HE WAS REFUSED THE RENOMINATED TO HIS OLD CONSTITUENCY. SINCE THEN HE WAS DEFEATED ONCE AGAIN IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN AN INDEPENDENT SEAT.

    NOW 72, MR. MENON RETURNED TO NEW DELHI WITH A STRONG SUPPORT FROM COMMUNIST SYMPHATISERS - WHO GATHERED AT THE AIRPORT TO MEET HIM CHANTING OF VICTORY TO "COMRADE" KRISHNA MENON.

    AFTER THE POPULAR RECEPTION AT THE AIRPORT, THE NEWLY-ELECTED M.P. DROVE TO THE PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS WHERE HE WAS WARMLY WELCOMED BY FORMER COLLEAGUES AND OLD POLITICAL FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES.
