  • Description

The proud Hungarian river Danube has been severely affected by recent dry weather - one can walk dry-shod along parts of the river bed where the water normally flows over 6 feet deep. At the Lupa Isles, you can throw a stone across the river - usually well over 100 yards wide at this point.

Along the embankments in Budapest, larger ships were stranded as the water level dropped and sewers were exposed to view. In some places, the river was scarcely 3 feet deep, nearly 20 feet less than its usual depth. This produced one advantage however - the embankment could be repaired without workmen having to wear diving suits.

As the dry spell continued, Hungarians waited patiently for the rain Forecast by the radio, and the increased flow of water from Austria expected by the water conservancy authorities.
