  • Description

President Sukarno, five days after his extended holiday tour in Asian countries, formally took over again from acting president Mr Sartono, the Speaker of Parliament. Present at the ceremony were all the Cabinet Ministers and their wives, the chiefs of the three armed services, and high ranking civilian officials.

After the signing of relevant documents President Sukarno, looking subdued and strained, declared that the Central Government in Jakarta would face the anti-Communist rebels in central Sumatra "Firmly, and with all the available means at our disposal."
Ironically, this anti-Communist rebellion is compared with the Communist rebellion at Madiun, Java, in 1948, as being the two most dangerous threats to the Republic of Indonesia since it was declared in 1955.

Sukarno addressed 300 youths from nationalist and pro-communist organisations which came to the Palace today to declare their loyalty to the President. They are typical of delegations which have been declaring their support. In Sumatra similar meetings declare they will support their rebel government to the end.

It is still hoped that large-scale fighting can be avoided in Sumatra, as that would most likely precipitate general civil war. Sjafruddin has declared: "Better Korea than a Hungary," but trusts both can be avoided and a united democratic Indonesia be formed.
