    Nijinsky, the Irish-trained horse whose formerly unbeaten record was shattered in the Prix de 1'Arc de Triomphe last week, lost again on Saturday (October 17). He was beaten by Lorenzaccio in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. Lorenzaccio, ridden by Geoff Lewis, held off a last minute challenge by Nijinsky who was ridden by Lester Piggot.

    Nijinsky's second place prize of GBP7,416 ($17,798) brings his earnings from racing to more than GBP 280,000 ($672,000), a record for any horse in Europe. His stable Nijinsky's last race. He will now retire for his owner, Mr. C.W.. Engelhard, in Texas.

    SYNOPSIS: The finish of the 1970 Champion Stakes at Newmarket: Lorenzaccio held off a challenge from Nijinsky to keep the lead and win a clear victory.

    Among the first to be led in was Hotfoot, second favourite to Nijinsky.

    Then came Nijinsky himself, to be greeted by his trainer, Mr. Vincent O'Brien.
