  • Description

A personal jet belt, a device that is strapped to the back of a person and which enables him to fly, was tested in Buffalo, New York on Thursday (29 May). The system was developed by the Bell Aerosystem; and, at least in theory, might eventually just be good enough to enable a commuter to fly directly from his backyard to his big city office building.

The jet belt was developed under a United States Department of Defense contract. It is capable of lifting a man to, at least an altitude of 25 feet and with a speed of at least 30 miles an hour.

The Army, maintaining military secrecy, explained that it could be useful against an enemy, especially in guerilla warfare. The belt is powered by a fan-jet engine similar, but a lot smaller, to the engines that no power the big jet airplanes.
