George Smith Watchataker is a full-blooded Comanche Indian. He is also three times World Champion and six times National Champion Indian war dancer. In addition, he is a professional rainmaker - and it is in this capacity that the people of Wichita Falls, Texas, sent for him last week.
Texas has been suffering a crippling drought for the best part of the last six months, and farmers and cattlemen have been fearing a recurrence of the disastrous droughts which hit the State in the early 30s and 50s. Affected so far are not only the ranchers, but also wheat, cotton and corn farmers.
On the day that Watchataker began his rain dance - Friday, April 16 - the National Weather Service announced a 100% chance of rain. But, since the rainmaker had been booked a week earlier, Wichita Falls decided to take no chances - letting Watchataker go ahead whatever the Weathermen had said. Now, no one will really know who brought on the rain - for, as Watchataker began his dance, thunder clapped and the rains came.... proving both the rainmaker and the National Weather Service right.
The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) commentary is full and explicit and we have let it run rather than write a new one with the same information.
