    THE PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS, ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, ARRIVED IN DAR ES SALAAM ON SATURDAY AT THE START OF A TWO-WEEK AFRICAN VISIT. AFTER A FOUR-DAY STAY, HE WILL TRAVEL ON TO ZAMBIA AND KENYA.

    THOUSANDS OF TANZANIANS LED BY THEIR PRESIDENT, JULIUS NYERERE, WERE WAITING AT DAR ES SALAAM AIRPORT TO WELCOME ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS. THE CYPRIOT LEADER FLEW IN FROM ATHENS WHERE HE HAD BEEN IN CONFERENCE WITH THE GREEK PREMIER.

    ADDING COLOUR TO THE WELCOME WERE THE NGOMAS, OR NATIONAL DANCES, STAGED BY YOUNG TANZANIAN MEN AND WOMEN. THOSE TAKING PART INCLUDED MEMBERS OF THE TANU YOUTH LEAGUE, LATER INTRODUCED TO THE VISITING PRESIDENT. ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, SPYROS KYPRIANOU AND OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

    THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENT WAS TO STAY IN TANZANIA UNTIL THURSDAY, JANUARY THE 7TH, BEFORE MOVING ON TO ZAMBIA.
