KING CONSTANTINE TODAY HELD URGENT TALKS WITH GREEK POLITICAL LEADERS IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIND A WAY OUT OF THE COUNTRY'S POLITICAL CRISIS -- BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE RESIGNATION OF MR. IOANNIS PARASKEVOPOULOS, LEADER OF GREECE'S CARETAKER GOVERNMENT SINCE LAST DECEMBER.

MR. PARASKEVOPOULOS HANDED IN HIS RESIGNATION TO THE KING LAST NIGHT AFTER ONE OF THE TWO MAIN PARTIES IN THE GREEK PARLIAMENT WITHDREW THEIR SUPPORT.

THIS IS THE FIFTH COLLAPSE OF A GREEK GOVERNMENT IN THE PAST TWO YEARS.

AMONG POLITICAL LEADERS SEEN BY THE KING TODAY WAS MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, 80-YEAR-OLD FORMER PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF GREECE'S LARGEST POLITICAL PARTY, THE UNION OF THE CENTRE.

IT WAS THE WITHDRAWAL OF SUPPORT OF THE OTHER MAJOR PARTY, THE NATIONAL RADICAL UNION, LED BY MR. PANAYOTIS KANELLOPOULOS, WHICH LED TO THE GOVERNMENT DOWNFALL. THEY HAD OBJECTED TO A PROPOSAL BY MR. PAPANDREOU'S PARTY TO EXTEND THE IMMUNITY OF OUTGOING DEPUTIES UNTIL AFTER GENERAL ELECTIONS SCHEDULED FOR MAY. THEY CLAIMED THAT THIS WAS TO PROTECT MR. PAPANDREOU'S SON, ANDREAS, FROM CHARGES OF HIGH TREASON. THESE HAD ARISEN FROM INVESTIGATIONS INTO AN ALLEGED ARMY PLOT.

THE 26-YEAR-OLD KING NOW HAS TO DECIDE WHETHER TO ASK ONE MAN TO FORM A GOVERNMENT, OR DISSOLVE PARLIAMENT AND HOLD ELECTIONS WITHIN 45 DAYS.
