Background: Tulip time in Holland is here again, more than 100 million beauties show their finer points in the bulb fields, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists to gaze at this multi-coloured landscape. All over Holland visitors queue to see these exquisite patterns of colour, to most people Holland and tulips are inseparable words.

Not all visitors to Holland come for the pleasures of the tulip fields. Along the Dutch-German and Dutch-Belgian borders there is a constant movement of people into the frontier villages and towns. Their visits to Holland are a matter of economy. With the present glut of butter and cheese in Holland the Government has lowered the prices of these commodities. Consequently, with butter two shillings a pound cheaper in Holland, the Germans and Belgians close to the border find it profitable to cross over and deal with the Dutch grocers. There is an import tax of about sixpence a pound, even so the price is appreciably lower than in the nearby countries.

Village grocers on the Dutch side of the border are reputed to be doing business to the tune of six to ten thousand pounds of butter per day!
