  • Description

Foreign Ministers from 23 Arab and African nations ended two days of discussion in Cairo on Thursday (July 10) with a declaration for greater co-operation between the two areas.

The final declaration from the meeting covered expanded contacts in trade, industry, energy and technical assistance.

Arab-Afro co-operation expanded greatly following the October 1973 Middle East war when almost all members of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) severed relations with Israel in solidarity with the Arabs. This attitude was rewarded by Arab assistance to African countries worth more than 200 million dollars (about 100 million sterling).

The agreements reached at the Foreign Ministers' meeting will be submitted to the text meeting of the OAU and the next Arab summit for endorsement.

SYNOPSIS: African delegates arrive for the final day of discussions between member nations of the Organisation of African Unity and representatives from Arab nations. The two day meeting was held in Cairo and was at Foreign Minister level.

The meeting was called to discuss future co-operation in the Afro-Arab world. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary General of the Arab League, Mahmoud Riad of Egypt.

Arab-Afro co-operation has greatly expanded following the October 1973 Middle East war when almost all members of the OAU severed relations with Israel in a show of solidarity with the Arabs. This attitude was rewarded by Arab assistance to African countries worth more than 200-million dollars.

At the opening session Arab and African speakers underlined the importance of consolidating co-operation to tackle problems obstructing economic development in Africa and the Arab world.

After the final session, the delegates issued a statement which said they would work towards greater co-operation in the fields of trade, commerce, industry, energy and technical assistance. The declaration will be presented to the next meeting of the OAU and the next Arab summit for endorsement.
