  • Description

Civil aviation workers in Ethiopia attempted on Thursday (28 March) to settle their strike -- now entering its third week.

A delegation of twelve workers met the President of the Senate, Leiutenant General Abiye Abebe, and had talks with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Ato Abebe Windimena.

The delegation asked for the dismissal of five officials of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation service. The five include the airport manager, personnel manager and the administrator of the service.

The strike began on the 10th March. It's estimated to have severely damaged Ethiopia's economy -- excluding the loss of 70,000 U.S. dollars (approximately 28,500 pounds sterling), which represented the nation's daily income from aviation services.

There's been a big drop in the number of tourists arriving in Ethiopia. Hotels and other tourist-oriented industries have suffered.

Observers in Addis Ababa say urgent food and medical supplies meant for the drought-stricken parts of the country are going to waste in ports around the country.
