  • Description

HUNDREDS OF AMERICAN WIVES AND MOTHERS, MANY WITH CHILDREN IN BABY CARRIAGES, GATHERED AT THE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL NOV 1, BEFORE MARCHING PEACEFULLY TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE SOVIET EMBASSY, WHERE THEY PRESENTED PETITIONS CALLING FOR "AN END TO THE ARMS RACE INSTEAD OF THE HUMAN RACE".

THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE PART OF A NATION-WIDE PROGRAMME OF SIMULTANEOUS DEMONSTRATIONS HELD BY WOMEN IN AMERICAN CITIES AND SMALL TOWNS IN PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING AND THE RESULTANT POLLUTION OF THE WORLD'S ATMOSPHERE. THEIR PETITIONS WERE ADDRESSED TO MRS KENNEDY, WIFE OF THE U.S. PRESIDENT, AND MRS KHRUSHCHEV, WIFE OF THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER, CALLING UPON THEM TO JOIN IN MAKING "THE SURVIVAL OF MANKIND THE ONE GREAT CAUSE OF OUR TIME".

FOUNDED IN SEPTEMBER BY MRS DAGMAR WILSON, A WASHINGTON MOTHER OF THREE AND THE ILLUSTRATOR OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS, THE "STRIKERS FOR PEACE" MOVEMENT GREW TO ITS PRESENT STRENGTH WHEN FRIENDS OF MRS WILSON WROTE TO EVERYONE ON THEIR CHRISTMAS CARD LISTS URGING SIMILAR ACTION. SPONTANEOUS DEMONSTRATIONS BY WOMEN HAVE SO FAR BEEN RECORED IN A MANY OTHER AMERICAN CITIES AND TOWNS.
