Background: West German football -- and in a jubilee match to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of its founding, Hamburger SV defeated Borussia of Munich 3-2. A crowd of 30,000 suffered freezing temperatures in Hamburg to see the club celebrate their jubilee in fitting style with the victory over one of their traditional rivals.
SYNOPSIS: Hamburg, in red, began the game with hard, driving football -- coming close to scoring within moments
However, Borussia recovered from the initial offensive to come back equally hard -- and with more success. Stielicke put the corner across to Wimmer, who banged it in to give Borussia a one-nil lead.
Another Borussia attack -- and a foul by the Hamburger defence line. A free kick was awarded against no mistake in making it two-nil.
But then it was Hamburg's turn, this time with a penalty. Kurtz put it in to give them their first goal.
Breaking their duck appeared to put fresh drive into the jubilee team, who pressed home again with a goal from Steffenhagen, after a messy goalmouth scramble, to level the score at two-all.
There was no stopping the Hamburgers after that. They bulldozed their way through the Zazcyk to give them the winner. And so 3-2 to Hamburger, who were lucky enough to have a last minute Borussia goal disallowed.
