  • Description

The Presidents of Angola, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia were meeting President Julius Nyerere in Tanzania on Sunday (5 September) to discuss the situation in southern Africa. The announcement came as South African Prime Minister, John Vorster, and the United States Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, prepared to meet in Switzerland to hold talks on southern Africa. United States efforts to find a solution to the problems of southern Africa were restated when the new US Ambassador to Zambia, Stephen Low, presented his credentials on Tuesday (31 August) to President Kenneth Kaunda.

SYNOPSIS: Ambassador Low presented his credentials at State House in the Zambian capital, Lusaka.

President Kaunda, who recently said it was time for war in Rhodesia as all peaceful proposals had failed, gave his assent to United States continued negotiations for a bloodless settlement.

Later in the day, the new Portuguese Ambassador to Zambia, Antonia Flore de Andrade, was received by President Kaunda. Portugal finally withdrew its territorial presence in Africa last year when it gave independence to Angola and Mozambique. It is the remaining white minority governments of Rhodesia and South Africa that the five African Presidents will be discussing in Tanzania.
