Background: Black militant Angela Davis appeared in court on Thursday (3 Feb) in San Jose, California, for pre-trail arguments on whether the state should pay for her defence and whether the venue of the trial should be changed.

Miss Davis is due to go on trial later this month on a variety of charges arising from the August 1970 escape attempt at the San Marin Courthouse, north of San Francisco, when three people, including the judge, were shot dead.

Miss Davis said while in Court that she would subpoena California's Governor Ronald Reagan to testify in her trial on the grounds that she is the victim of a state conspiracy, against herself and black people in general.
