  • Description

To mark the anniversary of the 1950 revolution that ended the Rana family's rule in Nepal, scores of development projects have been launched throughout the country. Under a Nepal-Soviet economic agreement an ultra-modern 50-bed hospital is planned for Katmandu, and Nov 11 Premier Koirala laid the foundation stone at an official ceremony.

Arriving at the site the Nepalese Prime Minister was greeted by Mr Sokolov, Charge d'affaires at the Russian Embassy, and shown blueprints and sketches of the hospital.

After a speech to the crowds, Mr Koirala descended into a trench to lay the foundation stone.

The hospital - costing over GBP1/2 million - will be entirely equipped with Soviet medical apparatus, and construction will be under Russian supervision. Initially, the hospital will be run by Soviet medical experts, but the work will soon be taken over by Nepalese staff.
