  • Description

President Mohammed Siad Barre of Somalia, has been to Iraq and Syria as part of his tour of Arab and Islamic states.

SYNOPSIS: President Barre arrived in Baghdad on Thursday (29 December). He was greeted at the airport by Iraqi President Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr, leaders of the ruling Baath Party and of the government. The Somali President was in Iraq at the invitation of President Bakr.

The talks centred around the situation in the Horn of Africa and bilateral relations. Over the past three years, the two countries have signed a number of agreements aimed at developing mutual co-operation. Among them is one for the building of a refinery in Somalia, which will be a joint venture. Under other agreements, Iraq will carry out a number of agricultural and technical projects in Somalia.

President Barre later flew on to Syria. He arrived there on Saturday (31 December). Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad led Government leaders in greeting President Barre on his arrival at Damascus airport.

The Somali Presidents's current tour of Arab and Islamic nations has also taken him to Iran.

Before the formal talks began, there was time for a rest and slightly more relaxed discussions at the Presidential Guest Palace. When the talks started in earnest, the situation in the Horn of Africa was again high on the agenda. The Middle East, too, was discussed along with bilateral relations.
