  • Description

A group of students staged a protest outside the French Embassy in Tel Aviv yesterday (Thursday) against France's proposed sale of 100 Mirage jet fighters to Libya, and French embargo of Mirage supplies to Israel.

The demonstration was made by students from various Israeli colleges and universities, and included several students from overseas. The procession of banner-waving youngsters were confronted with a strong detachment of police when they reached the embassy.

There was no violence, and after lodging strong verbal protest, the students dispersed.

France, in addition to selling the 100 super-sonic Mirage fighters to Libya, will set up a school in Algeria to train pilots of the Libyan Air Force.

While the students were protesting in Tel Aviv yesterday, Israeli jets struck deep into Egypt, killing 50 workers and wounding 69 in an attack only nine miles (15 Kms) north of Cairo, according to an Egyptian military spokesman.
