    HUNDREDS OF WELL-WISHERS SWARMED THE SINGAPORE HARBOUR BOARD WHARF ON NOVEMBER 10 TO BID FAREWELL TO MAJOR GENERAL E. A. W. WILLIAMS, GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING THE BRITISH ARMY BASE DISTRICT, WHO SAILED FOR ENGLAND WITH HIS WIFE AND THREE TEENAGED DAUGHTERS.

    GENERAL WILLIAMS HAS BEEN IN SINGAPORE SINCE MAY LAST YEAR WHEN HE BECAME CHIEF OF STAFF, FAR EAST LAND FORCES. HE IS SUCCEEDED BY THE PRESENT DEPUTY COMMANDER, BRIGADIER C. H. STONELEY.

    AT THE SAME TIME, THE DESIGNATION OF THE BASE WILL BE ALTERED FROM SINGAPORE BASE DISTRICT TO SINGAPORE BASE AREA.

    HIS DEPARTURE AND THE CHANGE IN THE STATUS OF THE BASE BRINGS TO AN END ALMOST A CENTURY DURING WHICH, FOR MOST OF THE TIME, BRITISH ARMY UNITS HERE HAVE BEEN COMMANDED BY A MAJOR GENERAL.

    BRIGADIER STONELEY HAS BEEN DEPUTY COMMANDER AND BRIGADIER IN CHARGE OF ADMINISTRATION, SINGAPORE BASE DISTRICT, SINCE OCTOBER 1961.
