Mr. Edward Heath, Britain's Prime Minister, arrived in New York on Monday evening (19 October) to attend the General Assembly of the United Nations. He was accompanied by his Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home. Mr. Heath will address the General Assembly on Friday (23 October).
Mr. Heath plans talks with at least a dozen of the world leaders attending the General Assembly, and is expected to make clear Britain's position on the supply of "defensive" arms to South Africa. During the week he will also meet Commonwealth representatives from Pakistan, India, Jamaica, Ghana, Cyprus and Fiji to continue discussions on the issue.
The British Government's proposal to supply arms to South Africa has come under increasing fore during the past week, particularly form President Kaunda of Zambia and Tanzania's President Nyerere.
