  • Description

THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN TRADE UNION CONGRESS, MR EDET BASSEY ETIENAM, HAS MADE ACCUSATIONS AGAINST TRADE UNION LEADERS OVER THE DISPOSAL OF GBP75,000 OF AID PROVIDED BY THE SOVIET COMMUNIST PARTY. HE MADE THE CLAIMS AT A SPECIAL PRESS CONFERENCE, IN LAGOS, ON MONDAY (26 AUGUST), CALLED TO EXPLAIN CONGRESS CHANGES.

MR ETIENAM TOLD PRESSMEN THAT THE CONGRESS HAD FOUND IT NECESSARY TO DISSOLVE THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, AND SET UP A PROVISIONAL ADMINISTRATION UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF A CARETAKER COMMITTEE. THIS COMMITTEE WOULD MANAGE THE AFFAIRS OF THE CONGRESS UNTIL THE NEXT CONVENTION, TO BE HELD WHEN THE COUNTRY RETURNED TO NORMAL.

HE ALLEGED THAT THE GBP75,000, WHICH HAD PROVIDED FOR THE 1964 NIGERIAN FEDERAL ELECTIONS, HAD SEEN EMBEZZLED.

HE ALSO ALLEGED THAT AFTER THE ELECTIONS, UNION LEADERS HAD ASKED THE PARTY TO PROVIDE GBP500,000 STERLING TO FINANCE A SECRET POLITICAL PROGRAMME CALLED "NIGERIAN ROAD TO SOCIALISM."
THE NIGERIAN TRADE UNION CONGRESS IS ONE OF THE TWO MAIN TRADE UNION GROUPS IN NIGERIA, AND IS AFFILIATED WITH THE COMMUNIST-BACKED WORLD FEDERATION OF TRADE UNIONS. THE RIVAL GROUP IS THE UNITED LABOUR CONGRESS, WHICH SUPPORTS THE INTERNATIONAL CONFEDERATION OF FREE TRADE UNIONS.

MR ETIENAM, WHO CLAIMED HIS CARETAKER COMMITTEE HAD THE SUPPORT OF 100 AFFILIATED UNIONS, SAID HE AND OTHER TOP OFFICIALS WERE LEADING A REVOLUTION AIMED AT PURGING THE SIX-YEAR-OLD ORGANISATION OF "SLOGAN-SHOUTING DEMAGOGUES, CROOKS AND EXPLOITERS".
