  • Description

AN EXHIBITION OF DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS BY THE NINETEENTH CENTURY LONDON ARTIST, WILLIAM HOLMAN HUNT, OPENED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM IN LONDON.

THE EXHIBITION CONTAINS ABOUT TWO HUNDRED EXAMPLES OF THE ARTIST'S WORK FROM COLLECTIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. IT INCLUDES SUCH WELL KNOWN PAINTINGS AS "THE SCAPEGOAT" - PAINTED AT THE DEAD SEA DURING THE ARTIST'S VISIT TO SYRIA, "THE FINDING OF THE SAVIOUR IN THE TEMPLE" - A CANVAS CROWDED WITH FIGURES AND A MASS OF HISTORICALLY INFORMED DETAIL, AND THE "TRIUMPH OF THE INNOCENTS", WITH ITS AMBITIOUS INTERLACING OF MOONLIT MORTALS AND SUPERNATURALLY LIT IMMORTALS.

WILLIAM HOLMAN HUNT WAS ONE OF THE THREE FOUNDERS OF THE PRERAPHAELITE BROTHERHOOD. HIS PURPOSE WAS TO USE REALISM AND ORIGINAL IMAGERY TO EXPRESS SIGNIFICANT MORAL IDEAS. TO DO THIS HE DISCARDED CONVENTIONAL COMPOSITION AND SUBJECT MATTER AND DEVELOPED A DETAILED REALISTIC TECHNIQUE. IN THE PROCESS HE DISCOVERED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EFFECT OF LIGHT UPON COLOUR. HIS PAINTINGS CAME TO EPITOMISE FOR THE VICTORIANS THE CHRISTIAN IDEAL IN UNDERSTANDABLE TERMS.
