  • Description

The United Nations Security Council has decided to keep the U.N. emergency force in the Sinai desert for a further nine months.

SYNOPSIS: The 15-member council met on Monday (23 October) to decide on the future of the peace-keeping force. The vote was called for by the Security council President, French ambassador Jacques Leprette.

Twelve members voted in favour of the resolution to extend the life of the emergency fore, while the Soviet Union and czechoslovakia abstained. The United Nations force, of about 4,000 officers and men, has been serving as a buffer between Egyptian and Israeli troops since shortly after the 1973 cease-fire. The current mandate expires at midnight (New York time/04h00 G.M.T.) on Wednesday (25 October).

China did not take part in the vote. The Security Council decision was a compromise. Secretary-General, Kurt Waldheim, Egypt and Israel originally agreed to a 12-month extension. But the Soviet Union wanted a six-month limit on the renewal.
