Background: In Bangkok on Monday (20 November), Thai students opened an exhibition of Thai goods in a further effort to persuade consumers to boycott Japanese goods in the country.

For the last few weeks, the students -- through publicity and public meetings -- have been campaigning against what they call a growing threat to the Thai economy with the steady increase of Japanese-manufactured goods into the country.

Their campaign, which has the backing of the King and of the country's ruling Executive Council, has had no noticeable effect on Japanese sales, although sources say the number of customers frequenting Japanese department stores has declined slightly over the last few days.

The students are backing their arguments against Japan's economic influence by quoting the huge defect in balance of trade payments between the two countries.

The anti-Japanese goods campaign, which is expected to continue for at least another week, has so far produced no violent demonstrations, and police officials have emphasised the need for peaceful boycotting rather than public marches and possible violence.
