    A GROUP OF VOLUNTEER PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM NEW YORK CITY ARE CONDUCTING CLASSES FOR 240 NEGRO STUDENTS IN PRINCE EDWARD COUNTRY, VIRGINIA, WHERE THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED SINCE 19529 TO AVOID COMPLYING WITH A COURT ORDER FOR RACIAL INTEGRATION IN THE SCHOOLS.

    THE VOLUNTEERS INCLUDE 17 NEGRO AND WHITE TEACHERS AND 16 STUDENTS AT QUEENS COLLEGE IN NEW YORK.THE STUDENTS RAISED 72-HUNDRED DOLLARS IN NEW YORK TO FINANCE THE VENTURE.ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS ARE STAYING AT NEGRO HOMES.

    CLASSROOMS HAVE BEEN SET UP IN TWO CHURCHES.THE PROGRAMMED INCLUDES CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION IN THE MORNING AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES DURING THE AFTERNOON.CLASSES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE MONTH OF AUGUST.

    WHITE CHILDREN IN PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY HAVE BEEN ATTENDING PRIVATELY SUPPORTED SCHOOLS SINCE THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHUT DOWN, BUT MANY OF THE YOUNGER NEGRO CHILDREN HAVE NEVER BEFORE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ANY SORT OF FORMAL EDUCATION.
