INDONESIAN LANDING CRAFT ARE BEING BUILT IN MACAO, THE TINY PORTUGUESE COLONY NEAR HONG KONG.?

  • Description

INDONESIAN LANDING CRAFT ARE BEING BUILT IN MACAO, THE TINY PORTUGUESE COLONY NEAR HONG KONG. THE SHIPYARD IS A PROHIBITED AREA AND WORK ON THE STEEL-HULLED VESSELS IS A CLOSELY GUARDED SECRET. THERE ARE NO SIGNBOARDS TO IDENTIFY THE SHIPYARD.

TWELVE TO 15 DIESEL-ENGINED CRAFT ARE GETTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES AFTER PRODUCTION HAD BEEN INTERRUPTED BY A TEMPORARY SHORTAGE OF STEEL PLATES. THE DELAY WAS CAUSED BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S BAN ON THE SUPPLY OF STRATEGIC MATERIALS TO INDONESIA.

THE SHIPYARD MAKING THE VESSELS WAS EXPANDED AFTER HONG KONG SHIPYARDS WERE FORBIDDEN TO FILL FURTHER ORDERS FOR INDONESIAN LANDING CRAFT, FOLLOWING THE LAUNCHING OF JAKARTA'S CONFRONTATION POLICY TOWARDS MALAYSIA.
