  • Description

A FORMER TROOPSHIP "DUNERA" LEFT GREENOCK, SCOTLAND, MAY 8, WITH A VERY UNUSUAL PASSENGER COMPLEMENT ON A VERY UNUSUAL CRUISE. HER CABINS AND MESS DECKS HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO DORMITORIES AND CLASSROOMS TO ACCOMMODATE 343 ENGLISH AND SCOTTISH SCHOOLCHILDREN, ACCOMPANIED BY 22 TEACHERS, FOR A THIRTEEN-DAY CRUISE TO NORWAY, DENMARK, AND GERMANY.

FROM GREENOCK, THE "DUNERA" SAILED FOR LERWICK, SHETLAND ISLANDS, TO PICK UP MORE CHILDREN, AND THEN ON TO BERGEN, NORWAY, MAY 11, FOR A TWO-DAY VISIT. THE HIGHLIGHT OF WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY A VISIT TO THE HOME OF GREIG, THE FAMOUS NORWEGIAN COMPOSER. RELUCTANTLY, THEY LEFT BERGEN MAY 12 AND ARRIVED IN OSLO THE FOLLOWING DAY. BOARDING A BUS AT THE QUAYSIDE, THEY WERE FIRST TAKEN TO SEE THE FAMOUS HOLMENKOLLEN SKI JUMP OUTSIDE THE CITY, AND THE VIGELAND PARK, WHERE EXAMPLES OF FAMOUS SCULPTURE ABOUND. BACK IN THE CITY, THEY WERE ALLOWED A "FREE PERIOD" TO SHOP FOR SOUVENIRS BEFORE RETURNING TO THE "DUNERA". FROM OSLO THEY WILL VISIT COPENHAGEN (MAY 16-17), AND HAMBURG (MAY 18-19), RETURNING TO GREENOCK MAY 21.

EDUCATIONAL CRUISES WERE PIONEERED BY THE BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY, WHEN THE "DEMENAA", SISTER-SHIP OF THE "DUNERA", MADE A SIMILAR CRUISE LAST YEAR. THE PROJECT IS OPEN TO SECONDARY SCHOOLCHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 13 AND 18 IN ENGLAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, SCOTLAND, AND WALES, AND THIS PARTICULAR TRIP COST EACH OF THEM GBP30.

ALTHOUGH THE CAUSE OF GREAT EXCITEMENT AMONG THE CHILDREN, THE IDEA IS NOT TO MAKE IT A HOLIDAY BOMP. A TYPICAL DAY AT SEA WILL BEGIN FOR THEM AT 0700, WHEN REVEILLE IS RELAYED TO EACH OF THE 37 DORMITORIES. BREAKFAST IS HALF AN HOUR LATER IN THE CONVERTED SERGEANT'S MESS, AND THEN ALL BUNKS MUST BE MADE UP AND DORMITORIES TIDIED FOR CAPTAIN'S INSPECTION LATER IN THE MORNING. THERE IS KEEN COMPETITION TO WIN THE END-OF-CRUISE CAPTAIN'S PRIZE FOR THE BEST BOYS' AND GIRLS' DORMITORIES. SCHOOL DAY BEGINS AT 0915, AND DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY THEY WILL SPEND TWO 45-MINUTE PERIODS WITH THEIR OWN TEACHERS IN ONE OF THE NINE CLASSROOMS, ONE PERIOD IN THE MAIN ASSEMBLY HALL FOR A LECTURE AND ORIENTATION FILMS RELATING TO THEIR NEXT PORT OF CALL, ONE PERIOD ON DECK FOR GAMES, SWIMMING IN THE SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED POOL, AND ONE PERIOD IN THE READING ROOM.

THROUGHOUT THE CRUISE VISITS ARE ARRANGED TO THE BRIDGE, THE ENGINE ROOM AND THE HOTEL SERVICES DEPARTMENTS OF THE SHIP. THERE IS A DAILY NAVIGATION CLASS UNDER A SENIOR SHIP'S OFFICER AT WHICH ATTENDANCE IS VOLUNTARY. OUT OF SCHOOL, FACILITIES FOR ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES ARE AMPLE. THERE IS A LARGE LIBRARY, RECREATION ROOM EQUIPPED WITH ALL MANNER OF INDOOR GAMES AND A JUKE-BOX FILLED WITH 80 OF THE LATEST "POP" RECORDS. THERE IS ALSO A CANTEEN WHERE SOFT DRINKS, ICES, CHOCOLATE AND TOILET ARTICLES CAN BE BOUGHT. A GAMES ROOM FOR TABLE-TENNIS AND SKITTLES IS ALSO AVAILABLE, AND FOR AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS THE SHIP'S CELLS HAVE BEEN CONVERTED INTO DARKROOMS WHERE THEY MAY DEVELOP THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS. OTHER FACILITIES INCLUDE A LAUNDRETTE WITH 4 WASHING MACHINES, AND DRYING AND IRONING ROOMS, AND A FULLY EQUIPPED HOSPITAL WITH 24 BEDS. FINALLY, THERE ARE THE OPEN DECKS FOR SITTING AND THINKING, DANCING AND SING-SONGS, BEFORE THE STUDENTS ARE CALLED TO DORMITORIES BETWEEN 2130 AND 2145 AND LIGHTS-OUT HALF AN HOUR LATER.
