  • Description

A team of Austrian and German climbers on Sunday (6 August) conquered the sheer north face of Rio de Janlera's 1,300-feet (396-metre) Sugar Loaf Mountain. The four climbers, who took a week in their attempt, are the first to have reached the summit by the perpendicular north face....with its notorious overhang half-way up....and had to battle extremes of temperature and conditions. The members of the team have said the climb was the most difficult challenge they have faced in many years of climbing, and have named the north face of the mountain the "Empress Leopoldina Route" after the Austrian-born first wife of Brazilian Emperor Pedro. A reception, led by Austrian Consul Wilhelm Knops, greeted the climbers when they reached the restaurant on the summit, which is only 20-minutes' ride by cable-car from the city and harbour below.
