Argentina beat Bolivia three-nil in Buenos Aires to boost their chances of winning the South American Soccer Championship. The home side overwhelmed Bolivia even though they were without most of the players who won the World Cup for them last year.
SYNOPSIS: Bolivia playing in the dark shirts made the occasional dogged attack but even the rare flash of brilliance was not sufficient to hold the vigorous Argentine attack. It was a reversal of recent Bolivian performances, when they beat Argentina in high altitude La Paz and defeated Brazil at home. But in this match they rarely looked like scoring, while Argentina took every opportunity. Dainel Passarela took advantage of a bunched up defence to kick over the heads.
Gaspari for Argentina dazzled with his nimbleness, to make it two-nil.
For a moment it looked like three goals up to Argentina before half time, but then the Bolivians neatly held possession to build up an attack down the left frank. Argentina's defence again proved infallible. In this case it was the Argentine goalkeeper who got in the way.
It was a popular save with the home crowd, but early in the second half the Argentie defence was again needed. It was to be star player Diego Maradona who later blinded the opposition to give Argentina the hat trick.
Maradona's fine shot did not end the Argentine offensive, but there were to be no further goals. Argentina must now beat Brazil at home to join Bolivia at the head of group two but their chances may not be good ... Argentina lost to the Brazilians a week earlier, when they met in Rio de Janeiro.
