Background: Former Israeli Foreign Minister and Military Commander Yigal allon was buried on Sunday (2 March) with full military honours. Israel's political leaders were among the twenty thousand people who attended the ceremony near Mr. Allon's home at the communal agricultural settlement, Kibbutz ginosar, on the banks of the Sea of Galilee.
SYNOPSIS: Yigal Allon died of a heart attack on Friday (29 February) at the age of 61 shortly after he had entertained visiting Egyptian Defence Minister Kamal Hassan Ali at his home. Mr. Allon was one of Israel's top military commanders in the 1948 war of independence and a cabinet minister in most Labour governments since the country was founded. At the time of his death he was in the process of campaigning to replace former Defence Minister Shimon Peres as Chairman of the opposition party.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin read the eulogy in which he praised the popular soldier-politicians as "a leader of the generation of redemption who fought to found the state". Israeli Prime Minister Menachem laid a wreath and was followed by Defence Minister Ezer Weizman.
Some twenty thousand people attended the funeral, including Israeli President Yitzhak Navon who watched the ceremony carried out with full military honours.
