Ghana's Director of Civil Aviation, Mr. E.R.K. Dwomoh, has ordered a tightening up of security at civil airports as part of the international campaign to discourage hijacking.
All passengers and their luggage are being searched before they board aircraft at Kotoka Airport, Accra.
Mr. Dwomoh called a special meeting of representatives of the airlines who fly to Ghana together with the police, army and representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, to discuss aircraft and airport security. He said security at Kotoka Airport was not up to standard and he set up a body to enforce new measures, not only for passengers, but also for staff, the wearing of uniforms and badges of identification. Security men are also being posted at the airport to watch for possible hijackers.
