Background: THE QUIET, REMOTE ORKNEY ISLANDS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TOOK ON A CARNIVAL AIR AS THE ISLANDERS BEGAN WEEK-LONG CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ISLANDS BEING PAWNED TO SCOTLAND. SCANDINAVIAN FLAGS FLUTTERED FORM FLAGPOLES AND COLOURFUL VISITORS FROM DENMARK AND NORWAY WERE AMONG THOSE WHO JOINED IN THE CELEBRATIONS.

MORE THAN 60 EMINENT ACADEMICS FROM SCANDINAVIA AND BRITAIN ARE IN THE ISLANDS' CAPITAL, KIRKWALL, FOR LECTURERS AND EXCURSIONS AROUND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES WHICH DOT THE PEACEFUL ISLANDS.

THE ISLANDS' FIRST LINKS WITH SCOTLAND BEGAN IN 1468 WHEN KING CHRISTIAN THE FIRST, OF DENMARK AND NORWAY, AGREED TO ALLOW HIS DAUGHTER MARGARET TO MARRY KING JAMES THIRD OF SCOTLAND.

AS HER DOWRY, HE AGREED TO PAY A SUM OF 10-THOUSAND GOLD FLORINS AND PLEDGED ALL HIS RIGHTS IN ORKNEY UNTIL PAYMENT OF A FURTHER 50-THOUSAND GOLD FLORINS WAS MADE. BUT THE PLEDGE WAS NEVER REDEEMED.

YESTERDAY, VISITING DELEGATES WENT TO VIKING SETTLEMENT ON THE BROUGH OF BIRSAY TO SEE LONG-HOUSES, A CHURCH AND A HALL BUILT BY THE ELEVENTH-CENTURY FORMER OWNERS.
