  • Description

SOME 3,500 CONTESTANTS JOSTLED AND SCRAMBLED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE 7.4 KILOMETRES (4.6 MILE) COURSE OF A CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING RACE ORGANISED BY THE BELGIAN NEWSPAPER "LE SOIR", NEAR BRUSSELS TODAY (SUNDAY). BRITAIN'S MEL BATTY KEPT AHEAD OF THE CRUSH, AND WON THE RACE WITH 11 SECONDS IN HAND.

BATTY -- NUMBER 1191 -- COVERED THE COURSE IN 23 MINUTES 10 SECONDS. EDDY VAN BUTSELE OF BELGIUM CAME SECOND, AND ANOTHER BELGIAN, ALBIEN VAN HOLSBEEK WAS THIRD.

WHEN THE STARTER'S GUN WAS FIRED COMPETITORS STREAMED FORTH IN ROUGH -- VERY ROUGH -- FORMATION. THOSE LEFT AT THE START HAD CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTY IN FIGHTING THEIR WAY TO THE FRONT, AND THOSE SQUEEZED OUT ON THE CORNERS STOOD NO CHANCE OF MAKING UP LOST DISTANCE.
