  • Description

Sudanese President Jaafar El-Nimeiry, opening a five-day International Food Symposium in Khartoum on Saturday (February 1), said that his country had opened its doors to the victims of the drought in the Sahel region of West Africa.

He said the purpose of the symposium was to discuss ways of relieving the threat of acute hunger to 400 million people throughout the world, and -- if possible -- to bring hope to the starving.

The delegates -- who include agricultural producers, financiers and international organisations -- were told during the opening session, that developing countries need to improve their agricultural productivity by all possible means.
