Background: A party of 75 scientists and cameramen had perhaps the best seats in America for watching the eclipse (20 July). They were in an American Airlines jet plane 45 thousand feet above Bangor, Maine.
NBC cameraman Robin Still was one of these aboard. He reported the view from the plane was spectacular. As the moon passed between the earth and the sun, the planets Venus and Mercury...normally hidden by the solar brightness at the hour...blazed with suddence brilliance
The eclipse was total in a comparatively narrow 60-mile-wide path across Canada and Maine. In New York City it was 89 percent total, and in Miami, Florida, it was 49 percent.
