  • Description

Over 10,000 refugees have poured into Kompong Chhnag last week after khamer government forces consolidated and recaptured positions along nearby Highway 5, some 90 kms northwest of phnompehn.

The refugees, most of them form the western shores of Tonle Sap Lake, arrived in 1,680 boats on September 12th and 13th. Among them were 76 Buddhist monks.

Last week's influx, numbering over 2,300 families, have brought the total to over 30,000 refugees show have flooded into Kompong Chhnang. Most of them are presently camped along the shores of the Tonle Sap River in makeshift huts.

Highway 5, south of Kompong Chhnang to Long Vek, has been under Communist control for nearly one year. Government forces have been trying -- with some success -- to reopen this segment of the highway for the past six weeks.

Government troops have mounted similar operations in other parts of the Khmer Republic. According to observers, the government's efforts to gain more control of the countryside and the population is timed to impress the United Nations before it begins in new debate on the Khmer Republic.
