  • Description

THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG, SIR DAVID TRENCH RETURNED TO THE ISLAND COLONY YESTERDAY -- ONLY HOURS AFTER SECURITY FORCES FOUND A LIVE BOMB PLANTED OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT HOUSE. ON HIS RETURN, SIR DAVID TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IN LONDON WAS FULL OF "SYMPATHY AND ADMIRATION" FOR THE WAY THE SITUATION IN HONG KONG WAS BEING HANDLED.

POLICE TOOK STRINGENT PRECAUTIONS AT HONG KONG'S KAITAK AIRPORT AS SIR DAVID RETURNED. HE HAD ENDED THREE MONTHS' HOME LEAVE FROM THE COLONY WHICH HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN COMMUNISTS AND POLICE.

DURING A SEARCH OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE PRIOR TO THE GOVERNOR'S RETURN, POLICE FOUND A BOMB. IT WAS SANBAGGED AND EXPLODED BY ARMY EXPERTS WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGE OR INJURY.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE HE HELD ON LANDING, SIR DAVID SAID HE HOPED THE SITUATION IN THE ISLAND WOULD GET BETTER AND FELT THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR BRITISH TROOPS TO BE SENT THERE.

COMMUNIST NEWSPAPERS IN HONG KONG PUBLISHED ATTACKS ON SIR DAVID YESTERDAY, CLAIMING THAT HE INSTIGATED "SAVAGE ATTACKS ON CHINESE PATRIOTS" IN THE COLONY.
