Background: INTRODUCTION: President Saddam Hussein of Iraq has pledged to continue sending troops to the frontline as Iraqi forces resist the latest Iranian counter-offensive in the 15 month-old Gulf war. The president made his promise at a reception for Iraqi troops returning from the conflict.

SYNOPSIS: The returning troops had seen some of the most fierce fighting of the war which broke out in September, 1980. For the fourth time this year the Iranians have been trying hard to recover the strip of border territory they lost during the initial Iraqi thrust. The oil-rich Khuzestan province at the southern end of the border has seen most of the fighting, centering on the towns of Susangerd and Khorramshahr. Saddam Hussein has denied Iranian claims that 2500 of his men have been killed during the offensive launched on November 29.

The Iraqis are talking of great victories, though independent observers have said the fighting has been heavy but indecisive. If anything the Iranian forces seem to be making headway. They have reportedly captured the border town of Bostan on the line of supply to Susangerd, and have reinforced their position outside Khorramshahr.

President Hussein's troops have made no territorial gains this year. In Baghdad, the capital, it is said to be business as usual, but the toll of coffins returning from the front has been mounting, and the masses may not always be ready to push their self-defined fierce fighters to the battlefront.
