CLARK, A FORMER WORLD CHAMPION WHO TOOK FOUR SUCCESSIVE VICTORIES IN THE BELGIAN GRAND PRIX FROM 1962 TO 1965, CLOCKED 3 MINUTES 29.0 SECONDS AROUND THE 14.1 KILOMETRE (8.7 MILE) COURSE AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 242.8 KPH (150.911 M.P.H.). HE BECAME THE FIRST DRIVER TO TOP 240 KPH FOR THE CIRCUIT.

    CLARK'S REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE IN THE NEW LOTUS, MAKING ONLY ITS SECOND APPEARANCE ON THE RACETRACK, IS APPROACHING SPEEDS REACHED ON ARTIFICIAL TRACKS SUCH AS INDIANAPOLIS. CLARK WAS REACHING 310 KPH (193 MPH) ON THE FASTEST PART OF THE CIRCUIT, SWEEPING THROUGH THE WOODED SLOPES OF THE ARDENNES.

    DAN GURNEY OF THE UNITED STATES PUT UP THE SECOND FASTEST TIME IN AN EAGLE. HE LAPPED THE COURSE IN 3 MINUTES 31.2 SECONDS. GRAHAM HILL, ALSO IN A LOTUS-FORD, WAS THIRD FASTEST WITH 3 MINUTES 32.9 SECONDS.
