  • Description

SIXTEEN MONTHS OF INTERNAL SELF-GOVERNMENT HAVE GIVEN THE PEOPLE OF THE SUNNY COOK ISLANDS IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC A NEW WAY OF LIFE. FOR THE FIRST TIME, VILLAGE COMMUNITIES ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO UNDERTAKE THEIR OWN PROJECTS, SUCH AS WELFARE AND IRRIGATION.

THE COOK ISLANDS BECAME INTERNALLY SELF-GOVERNING IN AUGUST, 1965. IN THAT TIME, THE GOVERNMENT - UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PRIME MINISTER ALBERT HENRY - HAS INSTITUTED A SYSTEM OF VILLAGE COMMITTEES WHICH UNDERTAKE LOCAL PROJECTS SUCH AS IRRIGATION, POWER SUPPLY AND WELFARE.

INCREASED USE OF FERTILISERS HAS BOOSTED THE YIELD OF CROPS SUCH AS ORANGES, BANANAS AND COFFEE, BUT AT PRESENT THE BIG PROBLEM IS TRANSPORTATION. A NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT SHIP CALLS AT THE ISLANDS ONCE A MONTH AND OCEAN LINERS CALL IN OCCASIONALLY BUT IT IS HOPED THAT A NEW AIRFIELD ON THE PRINCIPAL ISLAND - RAROTONGA - WILL BE COMPLETED IN 1968.

THE COOK ISLANDS ADMINISTRATION COVERS AN AREA OF 850,000 SQUARE MILES OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN. SOME 20,000 PEOPLE LIVE ON THE 15 ISLANDS.
