  • Description

TENNIS -- AND AUSTRALIA'S GRIP ON THE ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS WAS BROKEN YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BY SWEDEN'S JAN-ERIK LUNDQUIST. THE BLOND SCANDINAVIAN BEAT AUSTRALIA'S FRED STOLLE 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 TO WIN THE MEN'S SINGLES.

LAST YEAR AUSTRALIA MADE A CLEAN SWEEP OF THE TITLES, AND AFTER THE FIRST SET OF YESTERDAY'S FINAL, IT LOOKED AS THOUGH ROME WAS IN FOR A REPETITION. BUT LUNDQUIST FOUGHT BACK TO TAKE THE NEXT THREE SETS AND THE MATCH.

THE LANKY, BIG-HITTING AUSTRALIAN SWEPT THROUGH THE FIRST SET. LUNDQUIST APPEARED UNCERTAIN AND OUT OF TOUCH. BUT THE SWEDE TIGHTENED HIS GAME IN THE SECOND SET, AND SWEPT THROUGH THE FINAL TWO SETS WITH EASE.

THE TWO-HOUR GAME REACHED A FAIRLY HIGH STANDARD, WITH BOTH MEN HITTING THEIR GROUND STROKES LOW AND HARD. THEY ALSO FOUND THE MARK WITH CRISP VOLLEYS AND FIERCE SMASHES.
