  • Description

The gold course at Oakland Hills in Birmingham, Michigan, in the United States, where the Professional Golfers Association tournament began on Thursday (August 3), is said to be one of the most demanding in the country -- with narrow fairways, fast greens, and 119 traps. In addition, rain was soaking the course thoroughly the day before the match was due to begin.

Top contenders for the 40,000-dollar prize were Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer. Nicklaus, although joint favourite with Trevino and twice-winner of P.G.A. tournaments, had been operated on for a finger infection and was still wearing a bandage on it during practice -- which he had to cut short because of the wound. He said, however, that it was completely cured and painless.

Neither Trevino or Palmer have won any P.G.A. tournaments, but Trevino was reported to be on top form during practice. For Nicklaus, it would mean his third major title this year if he won -- following his victories in the U.S. Open and Masters' Tournament -- and compensation for his recent defeat in the British Open.
