  • Description

MIKE HAILWOOD OF BRITAIN TODAY (SUNDAY) WON THE 250 c.c. RACE IN THE ITALIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX AT MONZA. BUT HE HAD TO RETIRE FROM THE 500 c.c. EVENT, AND SO LOST THE CHANCE OF BECOMING THE FIRST MAN TO WIN THREE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ONE YEAR.

THE 500 c.c. RACE WAS WON BY GIACOMO AGOSTINI OF ITALY.

AS A RESULT OF HIS WIN TODAY HAILWOOD IS CERTAIN OF TWO TITLES - THE 350 c.c. HE HAD LOOKED A CERTAIN WINNER IN THE 500 c.c. EVENT AND HAD SET A NEW LAP RECORD JUST BEFORE HE HAD TO RETIRE WITH A BROKEN PISTON.

IN THE 250 c.c. EVENT HE HAD ALSO ESTABLISHED A NEW LAP RECORD.

AGOSTINI'S WIN IN THE 500 c.c. EVENT PUTS HIM IN AN UNBEATABLE POSITION FOR THE TITLE OF WORLD CHAMPION IN THIS CLASS. ALTHOUGH THERE IS ONE MORE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT TO BE HELD IN JAPAN NEXT MONTH.
