  • Description

    USA University of ALABAMA

Alabama Governor George Wallace announced he will not seek a fifth term in office. In an emotional address, he told the audience he had climbed his highest political mountain, and he was ready to go on to more personal goals. Wallace cited poor health resulting from bullet wounds he received in 1972 as a reason for his retirement. He has been a dominant figure in Southern politics for over a quarter of a century and attained National Prominence in 1963 when he stood in the front door of the University of Alabama in an attempt to resist a court order to integrate the University. He then campaigned for President as an independent in 1968. During the 1972 campaign for the Democratic Nominations, he was shot several times at a rally in Maryland. His confinement to a wheelchair, the result of the assassination attempt, ended his presidential aspirations. But in 1982, he was elected to an unprecedented fourth term, in a campaign in which he got significant black support.
