    In London, the 19th Challenge Martini epee fencing competition was won on Saturday (4 March) by the French competitor, Phillipe Boisse. He defeated Alex Pusch of West Germany in the final.

    SYNOPSIS: Pusch, fencing from the left, won the title two years ago, but had been dismissed early in last year's championship. Now, in the semi final, he faced the 1976 Olympic team bronze medallist, Christian Kauter was a finalist last year, but this time, he was no match for the more experienced West German.

    Phillipe Boisse of France, facing the camera, had come through the competition with decisive wins against all his opponents, and took an early lead against Pusch in the final. In epee fencing hits like this, awarded to Boisse, are scored only if registered with the point of the epee.

    In epee competitions, the target includes every part of the fencer's body and his equipment, as opposed to the foil, where scoring is limited to the trunk area. Boisse moved further trunk area. Boisse moved further into the lead with another hit into the lead with another hit against Pusch.

    But although the points were mounting against him, Pusch was by no means out of the competition. In scoring this hit, Pusch demonstrated the skill that had made him world champion two years ago.

    Each match is limited to ten minutes, and it was not until the closing moments that Boisse scored the winning hit to take the title with a final score 10-8.

    For the young Frenchman, the Challenge Martini trophy and a place on the roll call of the sport's leading exponents.
