  • Description

A controversy is building up in Paris over a plan to sell the site and building of the Pasteur Institute -- France's most distinguished private scientific foundation for medical research -- for GBP 20,000 sterling ($50,000,000 U.S.)
The Director of the Institute, Professor Jacques Monod, has suggested the Institute be moved from its historic buildings in the centre of Paris into a new building at Garches, 10 miles (16 kilometres) away.

This move, according to Professor Monod, would be the only real solution to the financial problems the Institute has been facing since World War II.

It faces imminent bankruptcy with debts of nearly GBP 2,000,000 sterling ($ 5,000,000 U.S).

Professor Monod said the sale of the valuable site would leave the Institute with surplus of 110 million frances (GBP 10,000,000 sterling), for reinvestment, even after the new laboratories at Garches had been built.

Professor Pasteur's bones lie in a tomb in a memorial chapel in the Institute and his home and original research laboratory have been preserved intact as a shrine.

These would be broken up if the Institute were sold.

A final decision is to be announced on December 19 after discussions with the Government.
